It has to have a special header, which must be EXACT, otherwise it's faulty. I know of one person who has created a custom one, but it was plain black.
And no, you're wrong. It can brick your PSP. If has been found that files over about 700kb don't work.
If you are considering making your own, i suggest you take caution.

Its too hard to make your own, i agree, so thats why i use the Prince Of Persia one, its way better than the regular splash screen. I tried making my own with pmfplay but it was a no go. Wasnt expecting it to work either, but still worth a try..
