Deniska has just released some awesome information on how to hook up a simple, cheap, USB-based GPS reciever to your PSP, and use basic GPS functions via a program he has released. As we all wait for the official, first party accessory which is planned for release in October '06 by Sony, some are jumping the gun and getting work on their own GPS solutions; after all, what is the PSP homebrew scene all about?



The detailed installation instructions are available on Deniska's blog, but basically, it involves ripping apart a USB GPS reciever's cord, and replacing it with the end of the stock PSP headphone connection. Since both USB and audio ports offer similar leads (ground, input, etc.), using the below picture, one can emulate Deniska's setup and have basic GPS support.



Finally, we have the actual basic homebrew GPS application, developed by Deniska. It is very simple, and in no means has any form of advanced GUI yet, but Deniska plans to incorporate this GPS viewer code into his Map Viewer project which is also in the works, allowing for realtime output of positioning onto a map, and essentially, offering a full-scale GPS solution for your PSP. This progress is absolutely outstanding, and should surely get Sony on their toes; great work Deniska, keep us informed on the latest.
