Kernel mode is an OS mode whereby you have extra priviledges as well as those of the other well-known mode, User. You can call upon functions with better abilities as well as general control over the hardware and software. If someone tells you that kernel is the ability to write to flash0, challenge them. Kernel mode has no direct relationship with the Flash0 software sector; Only that there is less security when it comes to higher-level functions. If you want to go really advanced, you can learn about the other CPU and OS modes; They're fairly interesting.
