Custom Gameboots And More Coming To Firmware 2.80!

kando has informed us that he launched a program through xLoader on firmware 2.80 that allowed him to not only delete files from flash0, but add his own. So what does that mean, exactly? Well, it means that things like custom gameboots, fonts, and so on can now be written to the PSP's firmware!

Now, why aren't we saying which program he used? Simple. There are absolutely no safeguards in place when you use this program, and it allows you to do anything to any of the files in flash0. On firmware 2.80, even replacing a single PRX module will nearly guarantee a brick. We feel it's important to keep you guys safe, so we're going to keep this relatively quiet until a safer method can be published.

Having said that, FreePlay has personally confirmed that custom backgrounds, fonts, and gameboots can all be written to flash0 using this method.

We look forward to seeing what will come from this new trick, and we give kando a round of applause for using a method so simple that all the developers ignored it as silly!

In the meantime, check out these videos brought to you by FreePlay and PSP3D.com that demonstrate the new advancements in action:

UPDATE:
Because we still can't write to the IPL (initial program loader) on firmware 2.80, this doesn't get us any closer to a working downgrader. However, it's still pretty nifty!
