You could do what i did. I tried this 2 times, ant it worked both. Shut off psp completely. Remove the battery, memory card and UMD. Let it sit for awhile. Put it togeather. Leave UMD out. Reset default settings, then try. It worked the 2 times my UMD Drive stoped working.

P.S. somehow, on the second try, i hid a botton on startup and the screen stayed black and made no noise. It was like a brick or somthing. % secs later some white text flashed on top, and my psp restarted. Wierd.
