This is kind of old... you can do this with RCOEdit, the same program to change the battery icons and volume bar and pretty much every single graphic in the XMB, including subbmenu icons and such. I'm currently writing a tutorial/guide that details this whole process.

It's better to use RCOEdit though, as it exports the graphics as 32-bit bitmaps so you can manually edit the alpha channel.
