you could upgrade to 2.71 and hot swap the umd while loading but im not sure if it will work on 2.5 fw.
p.s. i agree with the rest the best option is the custom firmware as you can even load prx modules (cheat device etc) and you have a nice recovery mode for the adventurous psp users
