Video Game Addiction: Psychiatric Disorder? AMA Report Seeks To Declare It One

I found this on my local news site and thought it was interesting. What do you all think?

Quote:
CHICAGO -- Some doctors say there's a new addiction threatening teens.

It's not drugs or booze, but video games. The American Medical Association is getting a report that recommends video game addiction be officially classified as a psychiatric disorder.

The report is to be presented to the AMA's annual policy meeting starting Saturday in Chicago.

Advocates said classifying game addiction as a psychiatric disorder will raise awareness and enable sufferers to get insurance coverage for treatment. But some mental health experts say labeling the habit a formal addiction is going too far.

The move is also opposed by video game makers.

Doctors' Group Calls For More Research

CHICAGO -- Excessive video-gaming can be a problem, but the American Medical Association isn't ready to call it a psychiatric addiction.

An addiction medicine specialist said there is no science to support calling it a formal addiction.

AMA delegates had reviewed a report that seeks to include video-game addiction in a widely used diagnostic manual of psychiatric illnesses. They instead adopted a measure saying that while overuse of video games is troublesome, more research is needed on the matter.

The AMA plans to send the revised video-game measure to the American Psychiatric Association, asking it to consider the full report in its manual due out in 2012.

The AMA's report said up to 90 percent of American youngsters play video games and that up to 15 percent of them -- more than 5 million kids -- might be addicted.
