I had the same problem and oddly enough i solved it by putting a UMD in the drive. Dont know if this will help at all, but thats what solved it for me. Once there was a UMD in it stopped freezing and went straight to the black screen with a bit of a hex dump at the top. Then it was all plain sailing from there.
