Sad to say, but after reviewing the DMCA, it is indeed illegal. How? The UMD's design is a patented copy-protection itself, being a special type of optical disc with a unique outer casing. When you use a UMD ripper, it directly bypasses this, thus breaking the "Bypassing Copyright Protection" laws currently in place and the EULA you agreed to when you first purchased, opened, and played the game.
