The US video games developer Bethesda has announced it is to launch a Star Trek game for Sony's PSP.

The handheld console will run Star Trek: Tactical Assault, a real time space combat game.

The game is expected to contain authentic Star Trek races, ships and weaponry, and will allow the player to enjoy single-player campaigns for either the Federation or Klingons.

Players will also be able to engage in head-to-head combat with other PSP players through the wireless feature of the device.

Todd Vaughn, vice president of development at Bethesda, which is best known for its role-playing video games, said: "Being able to work with the entire universe of this beloved series is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us.

"We have some great ideas about where we want to go with this license."

The game is expected to be released in September.
