Looking to learn programming.

I am looking to learn either BASIC or C++. My girlfriend knows these languages and I feel threatened. Don't ask about the whole feeling threatened thing. Any way, should I learn BASIC before I learn C++ or does it not matter. Also is there a good source to learn these languages? I plan on using the sticky in the section to learn C++, but are there better sources?

Hmm.... One sec.

1. Don't learn basic unless you want your head to hurt... It took me a while to get used to Assembly, which takes like 10 lines to make a switch statement, much less loops... And basic is even MORE... umm... basic.

2. C++ is pretty easy to learn, and used in a WHOLE lot of applications and games today.

Ok, some links:
C++ Language Tutorial
Cprogramming.com - Programming Tutorials: C++ Made Easy and C Made Easy
Free Online Web Tutorials - C++ Tutorial

Some free C++ compilers:
Free C / C++ Compilers and Interpreters (thefreecountry.com)

^_^ Hope this helps...

Learn C or C++ first, so that you understand the basics of how computing works with object oriented programing... then, once you learn that, you can try and learn basic.

There's really no point in learning VB unless you want to make basic programs. C++ has a lot more functions. And another good compiler is cygwin.

Hey I am looking to do this on OS X. Do you guys know of any good compilers for it? I got Xcode, but I can't figure the damn program out. I'm confused enough by stupid C++ and I don't need to waste my time figuring out a dumb program. If you're wondering what is wrong, every option is greyed out all the time so I can't compile my program. All I am trying to do is make a lousy hello world.
