When will it end?

I've been thinking. The technology that powers computers, such as PCs and consoles (they're basically computers), has skyrocketed in power in the past few decades. We went from Pong to Crysis in just 35 years, while it took thousands of years of human ingenuity to get the ball rolling.

Just 35 years, from this:

to this:

I don't know about you, but I think that's incredible.

But that brings me onto the question - when will it end? All the game consoles released - ever - seem to have the sole goal of improving on graphics, with the exception of the Wii. The N64 existed to improve on the SNES's graphics, which in turn existed to improve on the NES's graphics. We're constantly working towards one thing, though we maybe didn't know it at first - realism. Some games are pretty close, like the aforementioned Crysis, but they are missing a few things - try pumping it out onto a 150" screen, and it won't look so awesome. Plus, the image is completely flat on the monitor or TV, which is not realistic.

Even games that are not meant to be realistic, like ones based on cartoons and anime, are trying to be realistic to the cartoon or anime show they're based off. And cartooney games that aren't really based off anything cartooney (like Zelda: The Wind Waker) are still trying to be realistic to the artist's original ideas.

And it's not just graphics realism we're trying to achieve. The Wii, which I said before was not trying to achieve realism, actually is. The Wiimote is a controller designed to improve on realism - compare Virtua Tennis 3 to Wii Sports and tell me - which one is most like real tennis to play?

Obviously, the plateau we're trying to reach is utter realism. It took us just 35 years to go from a dumbed-down, monochrome, blocky version of table tennis (or something) to a war simulator with near photo-realistic graphics, computer controlled enemies, and graphics rendering on-the-fly. Many of the boundaries have not just been crossed, but trampled - the leap from 2D to 3D, for example.

So all that's left is holographic graphics (or pseudo-holographic, which has already been achieved - see here), realistic control methods and completely realistic graphics, and then we've reached the plateau. Considering what's already been done, all that should take 15-20 years, at most, then another 5 for portable consoles to catch up. Once it's indistinguishable from reality, what comes next? All similar games will look the same. Nobody will complain about games having blocky graphics, or praise games for near-photorealism.

Consoles and gaming PCs alike will come to a standstill.

Then, game makers will forget about graphics. They'll forget about control methods. They'll concentrate on what was most important all along - ideas and gameplay. That will mark the true beginning of the golden age of video games. Forget about the 16-bit battle between Sega and Nintendo, forget about Shigeru Miyamoto - the only way for a company to survive in this era will be to provide things that are more fun than anything before.

But what will happen, in a few hundred years, when all the ideas we humans can think of have been used? When all storylines are somehow similar to that ancient game released in the 2100s?

What do you think?

I don't about you guys, but I play games to escape reality. Once they start looking like it, I'll probably stop playing. Yeah it's cool and all that we have come so far, but at what cost? To play a game where you kill something that could look like you neighbor? That's just plain inhuman. If we get to that point, videogames will become an even bigger target than they are now! Soon enough videogames really will become a "crime simulator" and greasy politicians and Satan, Jack Thompson, will have a valid arguement. If virtural reality becomes a reality and something that the "average joe" can afford then you really will be pulling a trigger and killing the cop in Grand Theft Auto 17,000 instead of pushing a button and having an animation act it out for you. As it is games are to real now. Take the Wii for example. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in Zelda if you swing your controller, or Wii-Mote for you Nintendo nerds, you swing your sword in the game. Call me old fasioned, but I would much rather push the A button and plan than do the actual work. And don't even get me started of Wii Sports. If I want to play tennis or baseball, I'll call my friends and go outside and do so. When you were little and your mother said "no sports in the house," she wasn't kidding. And Guitar Hero? Forget it! Just learn the damn instrument! Same with Rock Band. The days of "garage bands" are over. Now their going to be called "living room internet bands," which to me is freaken rediculous. Keep in mind I am a, real, musician. I am a Trombonist, Percussionist, and a psudo Pianist. I actually took the time to learn my instruments and when I see people playing "drums" in Rock Band, it just makes me stick. I have spent 5 hours a day every day for the past 4 and a half years learning drums and some one can pick up a pair of "sticks" and, if you can correctly say so, learn to do what I do in less than 5 minutes.

Alright rant over!

yup, you gots some valid points there dq9.

the closer games get to reality, the more likely people are to get 'confused' between them.

now i must defend myself

for zelda, its more like a flick than a swing.

and as for guitar hero/rock band, i dont mind as long as you actually play the instrument. also they are quite good at getting kids interested in playing the actual instruments, which creates musicians

im horrible at explaining, and not capitalizing the first word in each sentence

and has anyone noticed the new crave toolbar?

If you actually play the instrument then go play the songs on a real guitar! Sorry, I just really hate those games.

And yes I do notice the new crave bar

it shouldnt piss you off that rockband/guitar hero emulatore real instrument playing, being able to press 5 buttons on a small plastic guitar rather than learning to utilize all 22 frets on all 6 strings of a real guitar will be too hard for some(ive been playing real guitar for half my life, and everyone seems to think im the best theyve heard besides famous players)

and about the reality of video games, its not going to stop. virtual reality already is real, but it isnt what youre thinking of. virtual reality is any game you play today. simulated reality is what youre thinking of. prototypes have been made but nothing rock solid yet. simulated reality is literally being put in to a universe created by a programmer, feeling pain, smelling the plants, using your strength to swing a sword, peripheral vision, and seeing from ur character exactly how you see from your own eyes.

but whos to say that this hasnt already happened?
isnt it possible we're already living in a simulated reality?
theres so many "impossible" questions, that this could answer.

idk if it was a dream or what, but my first memory, ever, is being a teenager, about 15 years old. i was in an arcade, and had just finished playing a simulated reality game where i was an alien, and i had died. i looked at my watch and thought to myself, "hey, another hour before i have to be home, time for one more game". and i played the next one i saw, i dont remember the name or if it even had one, but from the display on the side it was a human family. so i put the thing on my head and the gloves on my hands and got in to the game, then i saw a tunnel of light, and had my second memory. me in my hallway at 3 years old. how strange is that, huh?

had to have been a dream...or was it?

P.S.
Im not joking about that part about me bein 15 in a simulated reality arcade. i truly beleive thats why i am here today.

It mainly pisses me off because music doesn't come easy to me, and yet I'm a music major, and these people play an easy game for five minutes and think that's what music is and then say I suck when I try the same thing on the real thing. So I'm no JJ Johnson (Trombonist) or a Buddy Rich (Drummer), but I can play the real thing. Not some piece of plastic.

I played many instruments during my childhood, many of which I'd got quite good at. Here's the list, from earlier to later -
  • Recorder
  • Piano
  • Violin
  • Clarinet
  • Trumpet
I got grade 1 in piano and violin, grade 2 in Clarinet, and my teacher said I was grade 5 quality in trumpet when I quit. All of that in about seven years, from when I was 5 to when I was 11.

My problem is I can't commit myself to something. If I feel it's something I've got to do, I won't want to do it - in this case, music lessons. I just can't commit myself, and that's why I kept giving up instruments.

I've now started playing guitar, which I hope I'll be able to commit myself to if I don't have scheduled lessons. But guess why I started playing...?
