Why pmp and not pure avi or mpg?

I think that PMP MOD is an excellent piece of software but I can't understand why there is no player for every-day-used formats like avi, mpg, etc. It would be great if we could just put our avi files into our MS Stick without conversion and be able to play them! I have seen an attempt to do this with avi. It is called "AVI player 0.2" but it is in beta and there is no development since August so I think it is abandoned project. It can only play DivX 4 files with 128 kbps CBR MP3 audio and has absolutely no control. You can't even stop the playback unless the file is over or you exit with HOME button. Why is there so much development with all these unusual formats and nothing comes for avi and mpg?

And why should we use pmp for this? Can't they create an avi player with better playback and audio? Is this avi container so impossible for psp to handle that we must create new ones for it? Cause the content can be the same! You can create an avi with Mpeg4 video and Mp3 audio!

The stupid thing is that you don't even have to really convert in some cases! If you have a DivX avi with Mp3 Audio in it then you are ready! Its like opening a box, taking out the contents and then putting them in another box! The contents don't change, just the box! And all this proccess cause this program cannot understand the avi "box"! This program can make the difficult stuff witch is decoding divx and mp3 and cannot do the easy one witch is reading the avi container! This is really stupid in my opinion unless there is a reason I can't understand!

avi file is just an extension, the codec used to compress the video/audio is where the problem is id assume. They would have to code up a divx decoder for the PSP, and an Xvid decoder etc etc.

The other issue is in the power of the PSP. If you've ever tried to play a 700mb DivX on an older machine, 222 - 450 u'll notice its really jumpy/out of synch etc.

im sure there are lots more issues, but untill you come'n'code up some software to do it, we'll just have to stick to converting stuff to play on the psp

This is what I mean! PMP IS able to play DivX and Mp3!!! There is no decoder issue! What it can't accept is the avi container! It wants this DivX inside pmp files!!!
