Console Sale Results

Six months since the release of both the PS3 and Wii, A comparison chart was put together displaying the latest NPD data of where the most recent consoles ranked during the same time. The Wii is ahead of where the PS2 was at the six month mark, and both the Xbox 360 and PS3 rank behind the Gamecube (and we all remember how that ended). The first six month sales of the consoles rank in digits for North America as:

Wii (2,470,000)
PS2 (2,200,000)
Xbox (1,900,000)
GameCube (1,540,000)
Xbox 360 (1,384,000)
PS3 (1,271,000)

If only the first six months showed the end game. Look at how small the difference between the Xbox and PS2 is in this chart after the first six months, and we know how that one ends too. The PS2 is still selling well while the Xbox has passed on. Although, it's getting hard to ignore the massive growth of the Wii as it gets older (insert typical quip about how it would be nice to have some more original Wii games here). With Iwata already expecting the Wii to hit 14 million units by next March, how big can the Wii get?

The PS3 is dead last. Why am I not surpised? Hopefully it'll bounce back in time. I think since they're discontinuing the twenty gig model they might bring down the price for the sixty gig.

It echos in my ears people in my school saying that the Xbox 360 is better than the PS3...I love the PS3 and ponder at times why it isn't as popular. My guess is that the pricing is alot better for the Xbox 260 and that the Xbox's graphics are better significantly or small.

It's the price mostly that's hurting the PS3 but if you hook a PS3 to a High Def TV it looks great. The details are awesome.

The thing is (IMO), the PS3 will likely never match up to the Wii's or X360's sales. Why? The PS3's price puts it out of bounds for many people, and the Wii/X360 have a much lower price point, and the Wii is also appealing to many non-gamers.

I agree about the price. That is the main problem but like I said before the price may be dropping sooner or later. They'll have to do that to save the PS3. You're also right about the wii appealing to non gamers. I saw an article in Electronic Gaming Monthly a couple months ago where they took a Wii to a retirement home and a bunch of old people played the Wii and enjoyed it.
