PSP firmwares lower than 2.81 cannot use cards larger than 4GB, while firmwares higher or equal to 2.81 can use the 8GB card. However, there has been some confusion as to whether 8GB cards can be used on custom firmwares 3.02 OE and above; though they are modified versions of firmwares higher than 2.81, they use the 1.50 kernel.

So, in other words, these firmwares can use 8GB sticks -
  • 2.81
  • 2.82
  • 3.00
  • 3.01
  • 3.02
  • 3.03
  • 3.10
  • 3.11
  • 3.30
  • 3.40
  • 3.50
  • 3.51

And these cannot use 8GB sticks -
  • 1.00
  • 1.50
  • 1.51
  • 1.52
  • 2.00
  • 2.01
  • 2.50
  • 2.60
  • 2.70
  • 2.71
  • 2.80

And any firmwares with anything on the end of their version number (OE, M33, LE, etc) might work with it.

As the price of one 8GB stick is more than double the price of two 4GB sticks, I'd get a 4GB, but if you absolutely must take 8GB of info with you, I'd get two 4GB sticks. Better to be safe than sorry!

Unless you use your PSP as a mp3 player, I really don't see the need for an 8gb stick.

And if one 4gb becomes corrupt \ unusable you lose a lot less data than if an 8gb becomes corrupt \ unusable.
