its a flash memory guys

The memory that holds the firmware is nothing for the reverse engineers of today. If the games require a certains version and even if it checks with the game/umd/flash , it can be 'fooled' thesh!

Think the engineers at sony have the slightest idea of making the impossible possible ?

I think NOT!

No. Well, not yet, anyways. That's what they're working on here.

Maybe the EUR GTA LCS will require 2.50? Perhaps sony delayed it in order to include this 'feature'?

I believe the main problem with directly flashing the firmware is that there is hardware encryption in the PSP that prevents this, the firmware updates contain a special key that validates the new firmware with the encryption.
Also, you can't just copy the validation key from any firmware...the hardware encryption most likely creates the validation checksum using the actual data from the firmware update. (i.e. if one single piece of data is changed in the firmware update then there will be an entirly new validation key)

That's how I 'think' it works anyway

Now, if someone could crack the encryption for that (which would mean either using extremly expensive tools to look at the insides of the chips or somehow stealing the encryption algorithm from Sony or maybe cracking the encryption using brute-force from really powerfull computers) then homebrew would be IMPOSSIBLE to stop.

IMO, somebody with the right expertise should spend some serious time researching that.
