Just use WEP or MAC Address filtering and you'll be fine. Also, I think the psp wifi max was released before 2.01+, so, there should be nothing there. Finaly, I do not belive that the fw number is sent in anyway over wifi, preventing software filtering.
Thus, I am 99% sure that it is ok with lower f/w's.
Oh, and I thought of one more thing: There are custom drivers for a few wifi pc cards that will alow it to be used as a router. There are also some software handled access point (mostly in linux; not all cards supported, most usb ones are fine) and sometimes you'll just have to modify the bios on the wifi card (can ruin the card, be careful). And on top of all that, some cards can't be changed at all. But this is adavnced stuff, do not try unless you know what's going on and that you know how to use google (most people here don't). Your best bet is to just buy a router. I have an old $10 (US, plus shipping) netgear 802.11b in my dorm. Works like a charm. Got it on e-bay.
