Installing Custom Firmware

This is a guide on how to install harleyg's custom firmware 0.2. If you would like me to update this guide with instructions on how to install others, feel free to PM me.

EDIT 19/03/07 - Under construction, thanks to a tip from theaceoffire in this thread about how horrifically outdated it is. I'll be updating it soon!

ok, i really think i screwed something up ><

my psp boots fine into devhook with the wlan switch down, but if i try to boot with the switch up, i get nothing... screen just stays black and my MS light flashes in like even intervals... even trying to boot into recovery mode with the hold switch down, i get the same thing

what i did was copy the PSP folder inside the 0.2 folder onto my MS and started the eboot, then i hit X and it said flashing files.... then done..... then after a few secs my screen went black and i waited for a little while and did a hard reboot (prolly where i messed up....)

so i guess my question is... am i completely fucked and stuck playing in 2.71 mode with devhook (at least i can go into usb mode and still play ISOs and there is a way to boot homebrew from the xmb with devhook .45 right?) or is there a way to fix this?

edit: and i could take a video of what is happening and upload it to youtube or something if any1 wants to see...

edit #2: ok, i just had an idea... if i could find out how to load homebrew in 2.71 with devhook.... then could i just run the unflasher thing by slasher? or will my psp be completely screwed then cuz then i wont be able to even boot into devhook

Sry to say, but it seems as if your screwed, the homebrew for 2.71 emulated is very hard to do, and it still only has user mode, no kernal works. Plus you can only do very simple apps, hello world, and your own creations. It has been done by flammingcowz, and i was a tester, so homebrew really works on emulated 2.71, but still only user mode, so you cant fix it unless you can get into recovery mode.

WAIT: What if you go into 2.71 and then usb mode, and set it to boot the unflasher at startup instead of devhook, that MIGHT JUST WORK, TRY IT, but if it dont, then your gonna have to use someone elses psp or get a MSPD card reader to set it back to devhook

oh, and i was gonna edit my post again... but i figured 3 times would be a bit much... but yeah, i can go into usb mode and edit the config menu, and set the homebrew to load by holding X... was able to get psprevolution and snestyl and devhook(lol) working by holding X at the startup, so i could just set the unflasher to X and then leave devhook with the wlan switch...

but what i was woried about doing by doing that is completely bricking my psp... cuz if it unflashes the custom firmware, but doesnt fix whatever i screwed up, then i cant even boot into devhook :/

edit: i think i might be the first person to brick using a custom firmware (or at least half way brick)..... makes me feel kinda stupid ><

edit #2: ok, im gonna go ahead and use the unflasher... and hope it fixes it

Thats why i never kept custom firmware, its too buggy, the unflasher puts the original vshmain.prx back where it belongs, thats the only thing custom firmware edits, so you couldnt have screwed up anything else, the custom firmware replaces that file and points it to the config file to tell it what to do. So by using the unflasher your psp should be just like it was before you used the custom firmware, so there is almost no chance of getting a brick

Im so sorry dude, I hate to see another 1.50 psp die, its so sad, but you only had 2 options, so wat else could you have done..

Now for all other people that have not used custom firmware yet, and plan to, be very careful as this can happen to you too, everything to do with flash writing has a chance of brickage.
