I'm phoning Sony now. (That word 'phoning' looks odd...)
EDIT: For £65, they say they can replace the console. Good deal?

Just buy a "broken" one from eBay and swap out the UMD. Then resell the "broken" one on eBay! Or just buy a zsecond "used" one for UMD play, and haX0r the bad/old one all ya want!
Hardware hacking is the way to go!
