Ever wanted to share some media with a friend?
Bandwidth not good enough for a 4.7 GB share using the database you made?
How about just streaming it to them!

It was apparently unclear: I am only streaming DVD's I have made (Parties, Special events, etc).
Please do not stream media that you did not create.
Again, sorry for the confusion.


All you need: VLC.
We are also going to be using WMP to view it, although you could also use vlc to do so.

And yes, VLC works for all operating systems!

After you installed VLC somewhere, begin.

Step 1. Open your firewall.
1.1. Ok, you have probably done something like this before, but just to refresh:
Go to your control panel, open "Windows Firewall"

1.2. Click on "Exceptions", then "Add Program". Add VLC to the list.



1.3. While here in "Windows Firewall", go ahead and "Add Port".
Pick any port number you like, any name.


Step 2. Stream your Media.
2.1. Open VLC, click on "File" and "Open Disc".


2.2. Select the drive you want to work with, and pick DVD if you want to skip menus and such. Check the box "Stream/Save", and click settings.


2.3. Ignore the top box of this menu, it will write itself as you check the boxes below.
Turn on "Play Locally" if you want to watch your own stream, but its up to you.
Check the MMSH box, and give it the right port number from earlier.
Change "Encapsulation Method" to "ASF"
Set Video Codec to "WMV2", 256 kb/s (Lower if problems playing), 1 scale.
Set Audio Codec to "mp3", 32 kb/s (not really an issue), 2 channels.


Step 3. View the stream (With VLC)!
3.1. Open VLC. Go to "File", "Open Network Stream"


3.2. Get the IP address for the computer playing the DVD and the port they opened.
Click on "HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS", and input the url "http://TheirIP:TheirPort". Click Ok. Done.


Step 3. View the stream (With WMP)!
3.1. Open Windows Media Player, and right click to get to the menu.
Choose "File", and then "Open URL..."


3.2. Get the IP address for the computer running VLC (The server), and the port that they opened.
Type in "http://TheirIP:TheirPort/".


^_^ Done! To improve quality, you can use a program like Daemon (Direct download here) to mount an ISO of your dvd, reducing load times. You can also turn on the cache in VLC, but its up to you.
