Question Quick Question: Which is better?

I am going to buy a new computer, and here are my plans:

****Updated****
Quote:
$314 ~Pentium Core 2 Duo E6600 Processor
$414 ($207*2) ~Corsair 2GB (1GB + 1GB) ram (X2), 4GB total
$165 ~MSI 975X Platinum V.2 Motherboard
$286 ~EVGA 512-P2-N637-AR (GeForce 7950GT)
$022 ~Chaintech av-710 7.1 Surround Video card
$064 ~Logitech X-530 5.1 Surround Speaker System.
$126 ~($63*2)Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YS SATA 3.0Gb/s 160GB 7200 RPM 16MB
$029 ~Lite-on DVD +/- RW (And Dual Layer)
$024 ~Lite-on CD +/- RW DVD Rom
$055 ~Rosewill RP550-2 Power Source (550W, 120mm Fan, PCI-E 1x6pin connector for video card)
$070 ~Xion II Xon-103 Steel Case (2*120mm Fan, 1*80mm Fan, nice and large for my stuff.)
$230 ~SEPTRE X20WG-NAGA 20.1'' LCD 1000:1 Monitor (Maybe two, not sure)
$007 ~Lite-On keyboard ~ Not wireless on this comp, need reliability.
$030 ~B7G-00004 Mouse Again, not wireless. I need reliabilty.
[/quote]
So the grand total would be $1,836.00 (before tax), or $2066 (before tax) if I got two monitors.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My old (this) computer:
Quote:
Pentium 4 (3.02 GHz Processor)
1536 GB of DDR2 Ram (2 256MB and 2 512MB DDR2 Sticks)
ATI Radion Stealth Video Card (WORST DRIVERS EVER)
(use Omega drivers instead for stability, easy removal/updating.)
(Also, ATI dropped my card without telling me. That was fun...)
on board Sound Card (Has 5.1 capability, so its not standard)
TV Tuner - Avermedia tv. Drivers didn't work, but they had em online. No big issue.
B/G Wifi Card - Linksys. I don't use their drivers to reduce things running with my computer... yeah, its not as neat or shiny interface, but it works damn it.
Netgear Wireless G router ~ Its cheaper than Linksys, but DON'T USE IT. I got a friggin IE webpage interface that popups up fifty billion times for user password while using it. Just spring for a better one, or hope you don't have as much trouble as I got trying to use it.
186.30 GB Hard drive
~16384 MB (16GB) for C:\ Windows Instalation, as well as basic computer programs, such as Aston (Desktop replacement), OpenOffice, and Firefox.
~8192 MB (8GB) for D:\ XP Swap Partition.
~Rest MB (XGB) for storage, so I can repartition/add in linux later if I want.
I moved Window's temp storage folders (And browser temp storage folders) to an external hard drive, to avoid loosing data accidentally due to C:\ partition failure. Also, this reduces the amount of writting that the hard drive has to do... if possible, I would like to move my swap partition to a separate hard drive as well, to reduce C:\ hard drive use and hopefully extend my computers life.
186.31 GB External Hard Drive
~All for tv recording. Tv recording is HEAVY use on the disk, and hopefully when this fails all I will loose is some tv shows, and nothing else. Also, this keeps my disk fragmentation down, which is important for us window's users.
465.76 GB External Hard Drive
~All for storage/backup. I have almost all my important data on here, which keeps it away from my OS. I try to only use it for holding large files, and access it as little as possible... ^_^ Not gonna tell you how many backed up disks, files, etc I keep there. Very handy, and reduces image time when backing up my C:\ Drive.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Planed Changes for Old Computer
My computer is decently fast, especially after tweaking it: tweakxp.com
Its clean of viruses, trojens, spyware, adware, rootkits and the like.
I turned off autoupdates from Windows, but I check often enough so that they don't give me an "urgent" update like IE7.
I disabled the motherboard video card to prevent conflicts, and I am running AVG instead of McAfee or Norton. (Thank God)

I am changing it for these reasons:
1. My video card is no longer supported.
2. My computer is no longer supported by HP (No new bio's, patches, etc)
3. While looking for new video cards, I discovered I have no pci express or agp slots. I would need a new motherboard.
4. IF I have to buy a new motherboard and video card, I might as well upgrade it all. Been itching to anyway.

SO, here are the (Future) changes to my old computer:
Quote:
2 X 512000 MB (500 GB) hard drives (Very cheap at Cost-co, actually)
Original Wifi card (For streaming tv/moves accross network, and for moving/converting files)
Original Video card (Gonna need it. MCE is picky.)
Original TV Tuner card (Doi)
New TV Tuner card (Gonna have to hack MCE to use both... ah well)
(Two TV tuners reduce 80% of all conflicts. Fills space more though.)

Basically, this tv is gonna be my TiVo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SO, here is my question, which I CAN'T SEEM to find an answer to:
Is it better to have 2 DDRM2 slots with 2GB of DDR2 ram each,
or 4 DDRM2 slots with 1GB of DDR2 ram each... and why?
^_^ Thanks guys.
4 slots of ram. If you want, you can expand way more than just the two slots. I only have two and I wish I had way more. Also I would go for the dual core processor. I have one in my laptop and it was well worth the money. Especially if you have the ram to back up all the processing power.
The speed is highly dependant on how the motherboard handles the ram.
If you had 2 it would be easier to upgrade to even more.
I got a decent response for this:
1. Pentium Pro 2 Duo can share the cache for each processor unevenly. One can actually use both.
2.a Pentium's run 32 bit and emulate 64 bit. 98% (imaginary number) of programs are 32 bit. PCI and PCI express (And even AGI) all are set up for 32 input, not 64 input, meaning that you need to do TWO passes for each block of data.
2.b AMD's run 64 bit and emulate 32 bit. All window's OS's except for XP64 are 32 bit based (Not sure about vista). Again, most programs are 32 bit based. This is why most Pentium's outpreform AMD's.
3. The Pentium Core 2 DUO 2.4 GHz processor (E6600) is about $314, and it VASTLY out preforms my Pentium 4 3.02 GHz processor. No contest. And you can overclock the Core 2 Duo (Highest I heard was 3.2 GHz).
4. The Pentium Core 2 DUO uses much less heat and energy due to the 65 nm process being used. Reduces heating needs and helps speed.
^_^ Also, my network guy who has over 60 Comps has tried almost every processor out there. He strongly suggests Pro 2 Duo's.
Also: Here are some benchmarks.
No thank you.
Mac's tend to treat their users as... um... Well, you know.
I mean, dude: No true gamer would use a Mac.
How can you custom your hardware? Overclock? Set up some (SWEET) sata 3.0GB/s 16mb cache 350 GB drives in raid 0?
Mac's are not built for software and hardware junkies like me, they are built for those who want something to "work" and doesn't bother them.
No offense to any mac users out there.
(Unless your using a one button mouse. Love to play you in UT2004 some time if you are)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

^_^ So I spent some time hammering out the parts for my new system:

O.o it would be the most I ever spent on a computer, but it is also the first I ever made myself.... ^_^ not to mention this thing is going to ROCK hardcore.

O.o I went ahead and got four slots on the motherboard, which is rated to handle 8gb DDR2 should the need arise.

If you guys think I left anything out, let me know.

^_^ My current computer has a pentium. Gotta love it...

>.< *sigh* my last computer was bought back before 1GB of ram was standard. Only had 2 256 MB of DDR2, and it was... annoying.

Oh, I updated my list for my new computer (see above), and its gonna cost a bit. Worth it I think.
