Heya there. It's not even funny how much of a n00b I am, so bare with me as I tell you my problem. I stupidly upgraded to 3.11 Firmware from Sony, and I have never used any homebrew or hacks on my PSP at all. Can someone list me the steps (clearly, as I have no clue what the lingo, like OE-C or "custom formware" means) of what I can do in order to use "Edison Carter's Liberty City Stories Cheat Device"? I understand I may need a "downgrader" that is not out yet. I wanna use that Cheat Device so badly, it's crazy. I, as well, would also like to keep my options open in order to maybe put more hacks/homebrew on in the future. Thank you INCREDIBLY. As well, from what I've heard about OE-A's and C's (or something like that) there handy. LOL. Exactly what are they and how can I get to that point, eventually, from 3.11. Yes, I know I Should have NEVER upgraded, but that's before I found out how cool this is

And one more, as well... What one or two things do I really need to make the GTA Cheat Device work? Thanks SOOOOO much.

I also downloaded this 3.10 OE-A thingamajig (see how dumb I am) which, If I installed, would allow me to use the cheat device... HOW LOL. There is no 3.11 one yet, and people have said that, in terms of hack, .10 and .11 are incredibly similar. Basically what I'm asking is do I need some sort of other HomeBrew to install that? how does this all work. THANKS

Quick answer: You can't.

Long answer: Because you're not on a firmware revision that is currently exploited, you cannot run any homebrew on it. Downgraders, cheat devices, and custom firmwares are all forms of homebrew.
Therefore, 3.11 is incapable of doing anything other than what Sony let you do. (Ie, official features only; no cheat devices).

Also, the firmware isn't likely to be exploited any time soon. The security is so damned tight nowadays that we may never break it. Though, if 3.11 ever does get exploited, come back and we'll be more than happy to help!

Thank you very much! So lets say something does come out for 3.11. What would I hope for it to be and... what would it do? does that 3.10 OE thing install on a 3.10 FW System without any previous homebrew, or how does that work? Thanks again, I don't think I could be more of a pain

Well, what you want is a downgrader. What it would do would flash firmware 1.50, which is the simplest version for homebrew, but also the most compatible.

What you would then want to do is update to the latest OE firmware (currently 3.10 OE-A'). It combines 99% of the compatibility of 1.50, plus all the latest official features, plus a recovery mode to protect you from bricks, plus plugin support (eg, cheat devices for games, XMB extensions), CPU speed toggling, and full speed PS1 emulation. How does that sound, bro?

Of course, you always have the lower-level exploit which doesn't result in a downgrader, but allows for loading about 70% of user-mode homebrew. (The simple stuff, like games and file managers), but no cheat devices.

Holy Crap, I can't thank you enough! So, when the downgarder does come out (apparently, 3.11 has been easily hacked, as it was not much different from 3.10, according to rumours around the net, but "Dark_AleX" is taking a break or something like that, I have no clue, remember, I'm not good on this subject

) All I'd have to do is goto 1.5, and then I would be able to install that "Custom Firmware" like 3.10 OE-A2 (newest version I believe) and then add the cheat device from there? Because in order to activate the device, I need some recovery mode or something, which all of these things come with...? I hope I have that straight... right? So all I'm basically waiting for is the (for now, ficticious) downgrader and I'm set? THANKS A TON!

As well, in the "research" I have been doing, the name Dark_AleX keeps popping up everywhere I go. Is he a PSP hacking legend or something? lol

Heh, yep, you do.

You basically have the gist of it there, apart from one thing. We're nowehere near cracking 3.11; and we're nowhere near cracking 3.10, either. You're thinking of OE firmwares - we already have a 3.10 OE firmware, but that doesn't mean we've cracked it. Since there's very little difference between 3.10 and 3.11 Dark_AleX (the man with the plan) decided not to make a 3.11 OE.
Yes, he's on a break; he said if nobody had cracked the 3.10 topmenu icon format then he'd check it out.

So, no homebrew for you just yet!

EDIT: Gun, I don't think he wanted that information. He's not able to use homebrew, and I'm sure he's not very interested in how it works (yet, anyway). Besides, your FAQ is inaccurate.

EDIT 2: It wasn't that bad, just had some lumps! Work on it a bit more after some research and I'm sure it'll be great! Despite what you may or may not think, you're an intelligent guy - intelligent enough to excel at things like that. Most people here are.

So, does the 3.10 OE-A Update basically contain all of the main things that Sony put into their 3.10 update, as well as the homebrew capabilities of 1.5? Without Sony's nagging "so-called security features". And it has some sort of "recovery mode" to enable cheat devies and prevent brickings. And does this thing give you new folders on you MemStick to put "Cheat Devices"... Is that right? When do you think there could be potential for a 3.11 Downgrader? Do they work well? (I'm just nervous is all LOL

Yes, there's a folder in the root of the memory stick called 'seplugins' which you place all of your modules (cheat devices and such), then you need to tell the firmware it's there by placing the filename in a txt file called GAME.TXT or VSH.TXT etc (cheat devices obviously go in GAME).
You can then toggle it on/off from recovery.

3.1x downgraders are a way off. First we need an exploit (a security flaw in the official firmware), which we may or may not find any time soon.
(Don't even bother modifying a 1.50 update to say it's like 3.20 or something; it can't be done).

Once we have an exploit, it will typically be user-mode which means the CPU will only accept unsigned code if it doesn't contain any kernel functions (ie ones that could allow us to access Flash0 or downgrade. (Just because we have flash0 access, doesn't mean we can downgrade).
If it's kernel mode, which is less likely (or we manage to exploit the user exploit into letting us use kernel functions), then we can access the flash0 sector of the internal NAND chip and possibly downgrade.

Downgraders are always risky, it mainly just depends what security they have and how crude the exploit is.
