Question Need some help creating a Pandora Memory Stick

Hello all, I was given a PSP that appears to be bricked. I only get the green power light with an un-modified battery. I did modify a fat battery with the soldered jumper and when installed I get the green power light and the memory stick and wifi lights too. All three lights are solid and do not flicker. I have made the pandora memory stick no less than twenty times and I never even get a flicker on the MS light.
Can anyone tell me how to make a bootable memory stick? I don't even care if it works to load the firmware at this point; I just want to make sure the PSP is reading the memory stick. I just want to see the light flicker, if I can do that, I will move to the next step. I have used the total noobe memory stick program thing and that seems to go ok in the PC, but, doesn't do a think for the PSP.

Also, I would like to know if I have the necessary equipment to unbrick a PSP.
I have a PC with XP and a card reader/writer.
I have 1ea. appears to be bricked PSP
I have a 1gb memory stick
I have 1ea fat battery with the pandora jumper soldered in.

I am a noobie so, please forgive if this sounds lame. From my vantage point; it sucks and is frustrating.

Thank you all in advance,
Cameron

Everything seems fine, from your description... the Pandora seems to be OK, the PSP is doing all the right things. But as it's not working, we need to do some troubleshooting.

As it seems you're already using the TotalNewbi installer, I think it would be best to check a few more things. Please answer these questions as best you can -
  1. Where did you get the Memory Stick? Do you know if it is fake?
  2. After the Pandora installation goes OK on the PC, are any files placed onto the MS?
  3. As you were given the PSP, I don't expect you to be able to answer this, but... do you know how the PSP got bricked?

Please answer those as best you can.

Answers

Hello, I will do my best to answer the questions.
1. I got the memory stick from my friend. The stick says:
Sony, MemooryStickPRODuo, 1GB MagicGate on the front and MSX-M1GST, G628L 1L, HUBD1000000, Made in Japan on the back. It looks leget.

2. After the noobie installer is done I have three folders on the memory stick and two files at the root. Folders are KD, PSP and Registry. The files are 371.pbp and msipl.bin. Bytes used show 25,812,992 (24.6 MB) if that helps.

3. I am not sure if this PSP is bricked or just broken. My friend is not too technical and he just said it doesn't work anymore. I asked what he was doing when it quit working and he said he couldn't remember, he just said it doesn't work anymore. So he gave it to me.

The PSP makes no sound, no speakers, no UMD, no nothing. I only get a green pwr light that will stay on solid with the stock battery. And with the modified pandora battery and the stick installed I get the orange and the green lights iluminated on the left side. I assume the memory stick access light and the wifi access lights. (I am new to the PSP, that's the reason for my assumptions on the two lights on the left)

I hope the answers are helpful, Thank you.

my advice would be to go to: PSP Discussions - Powered by vBulletin and talk to JohnnyMcKinney about it. he makes pandora's.

It seems from your answer to Q2 that everything went OK, and as your friend is not too technical it's unlikely that he could have bricked it. Bricking a PSP requires either 1. to turn the PSP off during a firmware update or 2. to delete files off the flash0. And the only unfixable way (i.e. cannot be fixed, even by Pandora) of bricking just through software is messing with the idstorage, which is even harder, and certainly not something that a 'not too technical' person could do.

So, all in all, I think the PSP is just broken, not bricked. Sorry.

(Though... if this PSP really means something to you... you could buy another MS from a 100% reputable brick-and-mortar source, like Best Buy or Carphone Warehouse, then try. There's always the possibility that the MS is fake.)

Broken PSP

I am really starting to feel like it is broken too. I am going to make one more attempt with known good files and then look for someon to repair it.
Do you have any suggestions for a repair person/company or should I just send it to Sony?

If you know it's under warranty and have the proof of purchase to prove it, then go ahead and send it to Sony - but make sure to leave the modified battery out of the PSP when you do, and format the MS.

Yea, thats good advice. I think I will leave the MS and the battery out of it. I don't think it is in warranty but, I will check.

Thanks,
Cameron
