Actually, as coincidence would have it, I am backing up my GTA right now. But before I can help, I need to know - what size memory stick do you have?

You should use the dax dumper, so it dumps it to a dax, then you can uncompress it on the comp, if you dont your gonna have to do it in 2 parts

OK, you could try FastLoader 0.7, but you need to joind those files and it offers no compression. I am using UMD DAX Dumper 0.2 Beta. It can dump an ISO in a compressed format, meaning the dumped ISO won't take up the 1.2GB of space the game does on the UMD, but it will only take up, say, 900MB of space.

EDIT: I am ripping it to a GZIP file.

I daxed my full 1.20gb dumped one, and it went down to about 600mb, i think

Dont dax GTA at lvl9, it causes major probs and sometimes freezes too, just cso it and play with devhook, and it should work MUCH better, i have the GTA umd and its way less jumpy on emulated 2.71, though i also have the ISO too

Note that DAX and CSO are both compressed files, so the CPU has to decompress the files required, thus running slower.
I would just suggest leaving GTA in your PSP, then set DevHook to run the UMD in 2.7
