question about formatting f1:

I have a question about the best way to clear up issues that are made apparent by things like the system info not reporting a valid string or being in japanese.

Someone helped me w week or so ago with a similar issue were my version number was in japanese after a few OE firmware upgrades. The result after some time of wonder what went wrong was someone recommended i format f1:. That did help clear up the problem. But it opened up a question in my mind too.

If we are "testing" on a psp, should we periodically format f1: to "clean it up" before we flash to new or old firmware?

f1: is the writable extensions of f0:, correct? The area that f0: uses to store user configuration information that could and probably will change during normal psp usage, correct? I am wondering all this because I want to make sure that if I am testing plugins or other things that require writing to f0: to mod the functions of the psp to customize it. Then would it be a good idea to wipe f1: before I do some things? Like flash up or down to a different firmware or changes to general operation like adding USB to PC streaming mod or what ever.

the real point of all of this, I have two mods running on my DaX 3.03 OE-c psp right now. I have the network update reboot.prx (cool tool) and I just added the "USB_Mod_v4b_For_3.03_OE-C_For_PSP" hack that replaces the systemctrl.prx and the vshctrl.prx. Now my system information hasa blank version number for the firmware. Could I fix this by formatting f1:? Or is it more likely the USB mod has corrupted a system key?

I ask this stuff in hopes of opening a discussion about the psp file system in general, but also to help me better under stand how f1: interacts with f0:

And yes I already know to be careful with f0:!!

So what say ye of knowledge and experience with psp?

Flash0: stores the internal kernel components and firmware resources necessary for running the PSP's hardware and software-based features. Without certain files in that section of the NAND, the PSP would not boot.

Flash1: is the configuration sector, and modification does not affect the operation of the system in any way, even if any file is deleted. These files are non-essential, and if missing or corrupted, will result in a blue screen which will restore everything.
Nothing like the version is in there, so it's pointless that you would want to erase everything.

Your version number is broken because certain VSH plugins confuse certain files from the custom firmware and cause it to write odd data to the screen, putting it simply. This is not a malfunction.

What you said is exactly what I figured.

I disabled the USB plugins and my version number returned.

I just saw a new app that is supposed to be OE-C friendly that and the two function I was trying to use plus some others so I think I will restore my psp to the original f0: copy I have and then try the new app out.

It's called Custom_Firmware_Extender_1.1, has anyone tried it and if so did you like it over the reboot.prx and the USB2PC hosts hacks?

Oh and can you make the button of choice for reboot the network update button?!!

I've tried it, works nicely. I prefer it to the other rebooting programs, but I don't use the overclocking feature; we can already do that from recovery.

What I really want is ZettaBlade's AIO mod ported to OE. It worked on 1.50, but not on any custom firmware.
It overclocked, you could use autoUSB, had screenshot features, and had a feature I liked alot where it would underclock if the hold switch was on.

So how does hte reboot work, I haven't read the readme yet.

It works like this:

- The configuration file defines all the buttons with a value, each of which are shown in that file.
- You enter a value by the function you want to assign to that button.
- To use that function in the XMB, you press [Note]+[b]. (B being your assigned button).

For instance, in the config, the [L] trigger is defined as "0x000100".
So, if I wanted to use [Note]+[L] to reboot, I would find:
" # Set the reset combo button".
The line underneath it would say "reset = [value]". So, I would replace the already existing line with:
"reset = 0x000100", which would assign it to [Note]+[L].
