Noob seeking wisdom from the Gurus

Hey everyone!

I have a fat PSP running the 3.95 update. I wanted to see what different operating systems and whatnot are avalible for hacking it with. I was hopping that some people could also give me some links to good sites to get the programs I need to do it. As well as wanting to know after modding it will I still be able to play PSP games?

I am a noob to modding so if someone could give me pointers and whatnot I would really appricate it.

Thanks!

Well, there's lots you can do, but the first step you need to take for any of it to work is to put custom firmware on your PSP. To do this, you'll need to use a Pandora's battery and Magic MS.

There are several ways of making these, but for us to be able to tell you the best way for you you'll need to answer these questions for us first -
  1. Do you have a Fat or Slim PSP? (Slim PSPs have the WiFi switch on the top, Fats on the side.)
  2. Do you have, or could you borrow, a PSP that is already running custom firmware or can play homebrew?
  3. Do you have a way to copy files onto your PSP's MS? What size is your PSP's MS?
  4. Do you mind ordering products from the Internet?
  5. Do you have the courage to open up a PSP's battery and do some soldering? (Don't worry, this is only one of the methods that can be used, and is usually a last resort.)

Thanks for replying so quickly!

to answer your questions:

1) FAT BOY! LOL
2) No to that question, my friends are too scared to try it.
3) I have the MSPD adapter, and 2 USB cables. I have a 32 MB, a 256 MB, and a 1 GB. I use my 1 GB for all my general stuff. The 32 just has gamesave backups and the 256 is not being used.
4) I was going to order this from Datel so I don't have to open my battery http://us.codejunkies.com/Products/P..._EF000530.aspx
5) Just need to pickup some supplies like soldier if it comes to it.

I tried a set of instructions I found on this one website. But it seems that the 3.95 update has fixed a bug issue that allows you to i guess the term is "unbrick" it, because the PSP broswer keeps saying the files are corrupt. It could also have something to do with the fact that I don't have a service battery yet. I didn't save the website so I can't get you the link. Sorry.

Hope it helps!

What I'm really looking for is a good OS for it that I can play Super NES emulation and whatnot on. I was at ACEN and a guy showed me his modded PSP and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, he was playing StarFox and Super Mario World. Just thought I'd throw in a little background on why I wanted to try this.

ok, the psp's numner (3.95, etc) is called firmware, not os. and if you order that datel battery, you can mod your psp. you have to back up all save files etc on your 1gb.

then follow this guide:
YouTube - Creating a Pandora Magic Memory Stick

if you do that correctly, you will have a magic memory stick and the datel battery, so you can put in the memory stick and put in the battery and install (i think that is 1.50). after that is done, come back here and someone else will tell you how to update to 3.90/3.95 custom firmware to play all your umd's, music, photos, internet, downloaded full games(pm me), and homebrew(snes, genesis, or games made by people like yotu and me)

EDIT: you might be able to find someone on this site to mod it for you if you pay them, and pay shipping. I would do it but i dont want to be held responcible if i accidentally do anything to your psp.

There are many people who would gladly do it for free, so long as you pay for P+P. I've done this sort of thing many times, though I am located in the UK, and I think it's fair to assume you're in the US.
