This program should not have been called wifi sniffer, it should be "scanner".
There is a big difference and it will only confuse people.
I am not having a go at the developer, or making ANY comment about the actual program here.
So what are the differences? I'm glad you asked!:
- A WiFi scanner will search for available networks and report the results, and it could possibly even connect to these networks.
- A Wifi Sniffer will report the contents of the actual packets that are transmitted from a wireless transmitter... It could be an AP or wifi card for example.
Currently, there is no homebrew application that does wifi Sniffing.
I would hope that in future people can properly describe and name their app now there is some kind of definition.
All wifi apps use the same couple of functions to report a few things about found wireless networks.
I am in the process of changing all this. I am developing an app called PSPwardrive, and currently it doesnt do too much more than the current scanners around, except for presenting the data a bit better, and giving a bit of control in the UI. As soon as I have worked out a couple of issues I am having I will release it, but right now I don't want YAWS(Yet Another Wifi Scanner) floating around. The current ones do their job well enough.
Thanks to TyRaNiD for the ground work, it is invaluable!
Happy Dev'ing
