What is this?

What is KERNEL?? I don't know what that is, I know all this amazing other crap, but what is this KERNEL that you speak of?? and What role of a KERNEL is so important in running homebrew or overflow or downgraders?

Kernel access is required if you want to use the WiFi connection, USB port, IR port, or do anything that overrides the firmware(such as a UMD emulator).
