The word is KERNEL, people. KERNEL.

Kernel mode is an unrestricted operation mode of the CPU. When the system is in this mode, the PSP can run any code you throw at it.

ISO loaders use kernel-mode functions to reroute the low-level I/O commands to a file instead of a device, and to re-map the UMD device reference to the same file. This sort of manipulation simply isn't possible without kernel mode.

That said, don't confuse kernel and user mode for VSH, UPDATER and GAME mode. The first two are CPU execution modes; the last 3 are PSP OS modes. VSH mode is the mode the PSP is in when you're in the system menu, UPDATER mode is the mode it's in when you're updating it, and GAME mode is the mode it's in when you're in a game.

The 2.00 TIFF exploit ran from the system menu, so it had VSH mode access. It could do pretty much anything you wanted it to, save for a few more complicated things. The 1.50 exploit also ran in VSH mode from the system menu, but from a place where code execution was actually expected, so it could do anything.

The GTA exploit runs through a game, so it's in GAME mode. GAME mode is highly restricted; there's absolutely no use of kernel-mode-only CPU instructions, which means no write access to flash0, no remapping devices to files and executing code from them, etc. GAME mode is still capable of a lot, obviously, since we have all sorts of emulators and such in this mode. However, it's still pretty crippled.

Not much is known about UPDATER mode, because we currently have no way of directly executing code in this mode. The closest we've come is being able to reboot GTA in UPDATER mode, then running a slightly modified version of eLoader. The PSP isn't in true UPDATER mode at that point, though, since it still has all the restrictions of GAME mode, but the system does load a few modules differently than it would in the normal GAME mode.

ok cool, thanks 4 the xtra info freeplay. So if we found another exploit in VSH mode on v2.01+ PSP's, then we would have a situation where we can run almost any code like ISO loaders. I am not sayin it will happen, I am just sayin IF....

If anything does happen, it will only be on 2.01-2.6. Prob not on 2.7+. That's if any kernal access we are able gain in the near future.
