Joe D. has just written an in-depth article covering the reasons why Sony may need to watch out for a pitfall in PSP hardware sales this 2006 holiday season. From corporate blunders to inter-platform rivalry, sales for the PSP hardware may be low, though UMD games should sell stronger than ever before. What are your takes on this prediction?
"The winter holidays of 2006 are edging ever closer, and corporations as well as analysts are beginning to question the success of PSP sales during this year's shopping bonanza. The handheld, now a year and a half of age, is becoming less prominent in the gaming industry, as a handful of new next-generation consoles have been and are soon to be released..." It isn't so scrap that idea completely - and I know a lot of older adults (something you've missed completely) who own one.
And what games are you on about that are going to sell? Apart from GTA I can't see anything that would be of much interest, the psp's biggest problem has always been a lacklustre range of games - there simply hasn't been a game that has sold it at all, we've just recieved a supply of naff ps2 ports instead. There are some good games, just nothing to justify shelling out for a psp that's all. I've made the most of mine because of homebrew, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't still own one now.
But overall, I agree. I think the psp will struggle but I don't see the games selling either. |

Great article!

There's only two million units being shipped globally on release day, but then there's the Wii. It will be a hot selling item and take many sales away from Sony. I believe people will still buy PSP's especially since GTA:VCS is coming out. People hear the talk of the PSP 2? Yeah, only if you are on forums all day. Most parents probably do not know of this and will buy PSP's regardlessly. If I didn't have a PSP and knew the PSP2 was coming soon, I would still buy a PSP for the homebrew and other functions. | |
