Mavy has just released a very useful tool for people to check if their memory stick is legitimate or counterfeit. With the rush of Chinese replica SanDisk and Sony Memory Stick Pro Duos filling eBay and Amazon, there finally is a tool which can test to see if the product you received is indeed what you paid for, without having to rip apart your memory stick to see the insides. Memory Stick Tester will generate a .TXT file on your memory stick, which is the container for the test results. The application uses a number of tests to test the throughput and standard deviation from a legitimate memory stick.

You can also take a screenshot of the graph, which is displayed on the PSP's screen during the test.



Below is a brief guide on how to use this tool:
1. Start Memory Stick Tester.
2. Put the memory stick under test on PSP.
3. Press START to start the test.
4. Look at the results and wait.
5. You are now on the main menu and the results.txt is saved in the root. Now you can press SQUARE to see the plot of the results.
6. You can press SELECT in order to save an image of the previous plot to post on a webpage p.ex.
7. Triangle exits the application.

A couple of tips, directly from Mavy:
* Most important, copy all your files to the hard drive, format the memory using the system menu from PSP, and copy again the files to the memory stick. As it happens on a real HD, fragmentation can affect. A just formatted ultra-II can get more throughput (2MB/s) than a dirty one.
* Let the test finish (the duration of the test is proportional at the stability of your ms). In Sony ones, small block sizes last more than other brands. Please be patient.
* If possible disconnect running plugins.
