It uses infrared technology, so therefore it does not need a cable.

well if you have a psp phat you can use ir but the slims this dont work on.
but you can use a serial type keyboard on the phat as well, google/yahoo search - serial keyboard psp. you just gotta make the adapter.

on a side note to this i may will be getting the new video cable for the slim and will be working on mapping the pins for the 12 pin connector in the slim, havn't found that mapping in search yet. would love to se a serial driver for slim cause i want a linux box with a keyboard to go..

oh the possibilities

i will post the mapping to a web page that i will make and post when i get this done
