Sony: PSP “Piracy Problem” Has Fueled Sales

Very Interesting

Quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves has acknowledged that PSP piracy is troubling, but says that it has boosted hardware sales.

Image“There is a piracy problem on PSP. We know about it, we know how it’s done,” Reeves said at the platform holder’s recent DevStation conference in London, according to MCV.

Reeves said that Sony is preparing to introduce new measures to tackle persistent PSP piracy, but also admitted that the system’s vulnerability had at times resulted in increased hardware sales.

“It sometimes fuels the growth of hardware sales, but on balance we are not happy about it,” he said.

The thing is, game sales are where the money's at, not the PSP itself. BUT, I'm sure alot of newbies to homebrew just think it's going to be a straight-forward, copy & paste maneuver to play ISOs/PSX games/ROMS/etc on their PSPs, buy the PSP, and later decide that it's too much for them and give up. :P

I definately agree 100% on that. But $ony hasn't been makin' ne good games just for the PSP itself which is only part of the decline in sales though.....

To me, most PSP games look jaggy and pixelated. It would be nice if they really took some time to make a great 3D engine that is optimized for the PSPs hardware, with some simple anti-aliasing. Then they could just make a few great first-person shooters, and an Oblivion'esque RPG, and the PSP would own.

What I'd really like to see also, is the ability to have plug-ins on the memory stick that would be displayed in the XMB. Like weather, Google Search, etc. It would allow them to take RSS channel, Internet Radio, Remote Play, and GoCam!/Chottoshot off the flash0 and onto the Memory Stick. freeing up space for more huge features. Sony would probably never do any of that, because some people don't have space on their Memory Stick, but it's just a thought.

Anti-aliasing is DEFINITELY one thing that PSP games NEED... especially in this day and age.

As for homebrew being an impetus for PSP hardware sales... SCEA has known this for a long time, just not publicly admitted. Homebrew has always been a "boost" for PSP owners... adds a level of fun that retail games cannot compete with (as well as saves money). But ISOs are really what crossed the line, so to speak, and have caused Sony so much headache.
