Sony always keeps a close eye on their platforms, but according to GamesIndustry.biz, they have admitted they need to focus more on their sleek little portable machine. It's not really about the third-party devs - many of the game's top pieces of software have come from third-party teams - but it's more about Sony stepping up in two areas: 1. fix the PSP in the company's cross-hairs more often, and 2. actively pursue third-party developers on a more frequent basis.
Here's what SCEE vice-president Zeno Colaco had to say on the matter:
"We need to revitalize the developer community to get behind the PSP. One of the issues when you rely on a business model that relies 25% on games from Sony and 75% from other publishers is that if they start to refocus, you cant recover that space because you dont have the internal capacity, so weve probably suffered from that."
Let's not forget that one of the handheld's top developers, Ready at Dawn (God of War: Chains of Olympus, Daxter), has already left the PSP and moved on, leaving quite a big void. Colaco says developers should try to make "quicker, cheaper games" for the PSP, and that in the future, more developers will flock to the handheld after more PS3/PSN connectivity has been established. It's a great option for any developer, and more features should be added in the next few years. In the meantime, it does seem as if the PSP is selling much better in all major regions, and Sony simply needs to pay attention and keep the momentum going.

Unfortunately, a certain site that uploads ripped games now has "475,243" members and counting. So anyone who says that piracy isn't hurting the PSP big time should realize that, if each person downloaded one game, and they each cost 40$ each, and 1/2 of those people would have bought the game otherwise, then Sony lost: 9,504,860 US dollars. Now, that's pretty conservative, because I'm sure that people download more than one game on average. It increased by three people in the time that I wrote that, I just refreshed it. That's a potential 120$ right there.
