Sony Targeting Ads Towards Young Females, Deep Competition With Nintendo?

Well apparently, Sony appears to be in serious competition with Nintendo in taking over the young, female demographic of Japan, which has been favoring the DS by a considerable margin so far. New ads released today show morning/night time routines of young women, and how the PSP is incorporated in their lives. Too bad life isn't all fun and games like the ad videos portray it to be, but looks like Sony really wants to take a cut of the female pie, so to speak!

where is the competition ?! the ds has never been and will never be a match for our beloved PSP. or is anyone in here interested to take care of an absolutely nerve wrecking dog instead of pulling out headshots in socom ?! the ds is cool for kiddies not for serious gamers ! imho !

The DS is outselling the PSP in Japan, which is the most important gaming demographic in the world. And believe me, the Japanese definately prefer looking after stupid dogs to playing socom. Thats why Nintendogs is the top selling game in Japan on handheld systems.

No matter how 'cool' or 'mature' the PSP may seem to us western audiences, the DS is most definately the 'cooler' handheld in its home country - Japan. The simple fact that Sony are making these new advertising campaigns to the demographic of young girls/women shows that they haven't been in control of that area of the market yet, whereas Nintendo has appealed to them since the start with the DS.

And dont get me wrong - I love my psp. But you cannot argue against the fact that the DS has more creative games. And creative and inventive/innovative games are exactly what the Japanese market strive for.

And if you dont believe me, here are the latest sales figures from Japan:

DSL is the new DS Lite that has been released in Japan. DS is the standard old DS that came out ages ago. Putting both the DS's sales figures combined comes to a total of 136,557 units sold. This is 104,709 above the amount of PSP's that have been sold. Now, given that every PSP is made at a loss whereas the DS is not, this is a pretty huge problem for Sony who NEED to be dominating the handheld market in order to make a significant impact in the market.

Sony needs to do something about this, the PSP is a good console. But the DS is beating it on grounds of innovation alone.
