Points: 63,624.66 Donate | | | Monkey 64 Progress Update - Faster FPS! PSMonkey has just announced some additional progress he has made on Monkey 64, his Nintendo 64 emulator for PSP. He has found a new method that allows the emulator to have an additonal 5-10 FPS more than before, and has successfully tried it with Quest64, which has shown 17-20 FPS constant while inside a castle. Great work PSMonkey, this brings us one step closer to full N64 emulation, keep up the awesome work!
Here's what PSMonkey has to say about the progress: "Through blind thinking last night I figured out a possible spot to increase speed & will try testing it out later tonight. I also found out that implementing a texture cache should speed up a few roms (specially Quest which jumped to about 17-20fps inside the castle." Check out PSMonkey's homepage for the latest Monkey 64 updates here. |

Your eye can't notice a defference above 44-48 fps, and it is reported that most people beleve that above 27 fps is "smooth." Also note that the playback rate of whatever vids you have on your psp are played back at 30 fps (well, 29.99, but who gives a damn?). Hence 30 ish fps is quite playable, 20 fps is almost there, and 60 is cream-your-pants time.
Oh, and GTA:LCS clocks in at around 25-28 fps for me. Boost the cpu to 333 mhz, and it goes above 30.
I hope this clears things up. Data extracted out of my old mental science book, which is about 4 years old, but this is still relevent and up to date.

| | Junior Member | | | | I once played Smash Bros on the Powermac at my school at 300+ fps, which was like Smash Bros on crack. After I turned on the framerate limiter, everything was very smooth at a consistent ~60 fps.
This is really great progress. I want to see what kind of speed increase is coming in the next Daedalus update. Hopefully in a few months Smash Bros, Goldeneye, and Mario 64 will play at nice speeds. | |
