MapThis Announced!

Deniska has just announced information on a new project called MapThis, which will, when released, be a homebrew map viewer for PSP. Although it is currently in its early development stages and still very buggy, there are big plans for the future of this homebrew, as Deniska plans to make the program run side by side with a USB-based external GPS unit, for which he plans to make a homebrew driver for the PSP. If he does succeed in doing so, he will have beaten Sony to the GPS release, allowing us all to enjoy homebrew GPS freedom without having to wait till October '06 for the official release. Awesome work Deniska, keep it up and good luck!

Features planned include:
- Scroll though 3100x2500 pix map, covering ~ 52sq mi area with city level details.
- Zoomout (currently very buggy).
- Access area's attractions info (currently just restaurants) with name/address/phone.
- Mapping to GPS coordinates, allowing the posibility of external GPS feed.
- One map with attrcations data takes ~ 1Mb of space on MS.
- Application will come with a linux/cygwin script to generate map tiles and data from public sources for given address. The script can be wraped in to a cgi wrapper and therefore turned in to a web service.

Check out more information about this new project in his blog here.

This does seem like a worthwhile project, and I honestly think that Deniska can, in fact, take this on. I will be really amazed if the homebrew driver comes out a success, good look Deniska!
