It seems that a team by the name of Team Epsilon has 'hacked' 2.71 firmware with the help of the Undiluted Platinum modchip. They have supposodely created a BIOS replacement which allows for homebrew loading, as well as ISO loading; a demonstration of the homebrew launching capabilities has been provided in the form of a video. The authenticity is still not validated, so don't get your hopes up just yet, this very well may be a fake. They claim to be tidying up the code at the moment, and plan to release in a few weeks. Whatever the case, good work on this progress, if its real, guys! 
Here's a quote from the developers:
"Epsilon BIOS is a custom flash "replacement" for the $ony PSP which unleashes the full potential of your handheld, allowing you to both use homebrew software and run UMD iSO games from your Memory Stick on the latest Firmware releases while also enjoying the impressive features built into the operating system such as RSS feeds, WMA support etc. Currently the 2.71 Firmware release is supported - that's right, this means we have cracked the new encryption methods and developed the operating system hacks necessary to allow unsigned code to run, even in kernel mode." From the post, it seems as if you need a modchip for this to work, but perhaps a flasher will be released too, but only time will tell. They have estimated a release date within the next 1-2 weeks, but they have to work out the kinks first.
| I'm assuming its a thing that will let us use this hack without having the mod-chip.
