PS3 Firmware v1.10 released! Guess what? It supports Homebrew!

.

Hey, I haven't been here in a while, but I had to post this. And PS33D doesn't have a member news section, I think.

The PS3's new firmware adds the following:
Quote:
Whole (overall system changes)

* It reached the point where the service of PLAYSTATION Network can be utilized.
* With the picture keyboard of European language, it reached the point where it can do the letter input of single tap system.

Setting

* Music CD output frequency was added to music setting.
* ATRAC is made effective, added to substance setting.
* In type of keyboard of peripheral device setting, type of keyboard which can be selected increased.
* The “cross color decrease filter” was added to display setting.
* 5 minutes later option added to screen saver options in display settings.

Video

* When playing back the animated picture file which is retained in the hard disk and the record media with picture mode, it reached the point where full can be chosen.

Network

* Downloading music and the animated picture file with Internet browser, it reached the point where it can retain in the hard disk.
* PLAYSTATION Store - The following contents can be downloaded.
o PLAYSTATION 3 standard software
o PSP with the PlayStation standard software which operates (PSP system software version 3.00 or more is necessary)
* It corresponded to traditional form letter Chinese and simplified form letter Chinese indication with Internet browser
* The online manual was added.

Other

* In addition Calculation method of hard disk capacity was modified.
o As for empty capacity of the hard disk, the numerical value which calculated 1GB as the 1024?024?024= approximately 1,073,740,000 byte is indicated. Because of that, capacity than the numerical value which is stated as specification is smaller indicated in the instruction manual and the like. Setting the ⇒ [substance setting] the ⇒ you can verify the empty capacity of the hard disk, with system information.
* PlayStation of the part in PS3 and operational status of the PlayStation®2 standard software were renewed. You can now verify up-to-date operational status with the private search sight.
Sorry for the poor translation

To update, the PS3 needs an Internet connection, obviously; And can be downloaded under the icon. It's said to be at around 110mb to download. (A little more than a PSP update ).
If you're Japanese and lucky enough to own a PS3, download the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file into the "PS3\UPDATE" folder on the hard-drive.
Also, the US version is available.

By the way, I thought I'd mention the fact that the PS3 supports homebrew. *Ahem*, YEEEEHAW! That's right, Sony said this: "PLAYSTATION®3 allows any ******d third-party system software to be installed on it besides its system software provided by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Details will be posted on this site soon."

What does this mean folks? It means that our best Dev's can code us exciting applications to drool at after we aimlessly stare at the words: "Hello World". (At least at first). Well, it confirms what Phil Harrison said about the PS3 being an 'open platform'.
Don't forget that we're also running Linux!

Our best Dev's are on this, so let's all give them support!

Yippee! The future of Sony's new console looks bright!

You can find the official update site here: [HERE]

You can find the US update here: [LINK] - Hosted by QJ.net
And the JAP update here: [LINK] - Hosted by QJ.net

Have fun!

this is pretty damn interesting.

obviously, ISO loaders will not happen. blu-ray has so much protection on it, along with firmware security, that i highly doubt we would be able to have a loader.
but we can still have user homebrew, and im sure sony will have protection from writing to flash.

this definitely leaves to wonder if PSP FW 3.00 will do the same. User mode homebrew would be amazing. i guess we will find out tomorrow. cant wait

This will be FREAKING AWESOME. The PS3 has such a nice processor that full speed emulation for many systems will be possible. Lets not forget this is Linux, imagine a SUSE/PS3 dual boot. Or maybe a full fledged 3d mmorpg for the PS3. I sure would like to use Linux games and PacketStorm apps on a ps3 =). If this is Linux, this may mean kernel acess if we can analyze the source for exploits. If we can get to a login prompt, we can just L0pht crack ROOT.

-Gun335s sad incoherent ramblings.
