"Ken Kutaragi, the maverick Sony engineer behind all three generations of PlayStation games consoles, will on Friday become chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment in a management reshuffle that could foreshadow the company’s exit from video games hardware.
Analysts said that Mr Hirai’s promotion to a global role at SCE could mark a critical shift in management thinking, with Sony changing its emphasis so that the current generation of games console will be its last as a hardware manufacturer.
“The appointment of Hirai could be the start of a shift from hardware to software,” said Yuta Sakurai, an analyst at Nomura. “I cannot now imagine a PlayStation4.”
Mr Sakurai said that Mr Hirai’s new global portfolio puts a predominantly software-focused manager in charge of the company, adding that SCE’s future would be shaped by Mr Hirai’s relationship with Phil Harrison, the president of SCE’s worldwide studios.
Analysts argue that while Mr Kutaragi, a brilliant engineer, was the right man to run SCE as a hardware powerhouse, Sony may now see better opportunities as a pure maker of games. " | | These 2 PSP3D.com users think this news deserves homepage: | |

They know that their hardware is the only reason they have software. 73% of all of Sony's income is from hardware (this includes Play Station's, tv's, sound systems, etc), 23% from movie sales, and the rest is "other" [Info from Marketwatch]. Basicly, what you are saying is equiviilent to saying that Apple should stop producing hardware. Apple makes the majority of thier money from iPods, iMacs, and other hardware, then in second place the resale of music through iTunes, and finaly in a close third, software. What defines Apple as a company is it's hardware, just as Sony is defined by it's hardware.
Whoever started this rumor was high on crack.

I also voted this news for the Homepage. Why? Because I think that although this may only be speculation, he or she has every right to let other members know what's happening.
Sure, I'd change the thread around a bit. The title could be a question, instead of a statement. This would clearly indicate speculatory news, and add a little attractivness to the thread as a whole. Eg, 'Is Sony ducking out of the hardware business?'.
I would also be sure to introduce the news itself before cracking on with a quote from the source. Something like 'In the latest series of rumors concerning the hardware and software producer Sony, it seems as though a rethink of the company's attitude toward it's products could be on it's way'.
None-the-less, a rumor is still news, and if someone decides to let others in on it, I think they should be welcome to.
That's just my opinion. |
