Digital positioning company EPOS will be showing off some new mobile tech at CES: a system they’ve developed which allows users to write directly onto non-touchscreen phones. The setup consists of a “base station,” (actually just a chip) which can either be embedded in the phone or attached as a peripheral, and a special powered stylus that relays its position to the base station. Besides enabling on-screen writing and interactive buttons, the EPOS system can also be used for drawing on regular surfaces within a certain proximity of the base station, and also act as a Jackal-style (the Bruce Willis one) joystick for playing videogames or aiming a remote-controlled machine gun. Furthermore, the components can be configured for wireless transactions, wherein the phone sends payment information to a retailer and the user signs his/her name somewhere near the phone for verification. If we actually knew people who wanted to talk to us or we had money to buy stuff with, we’d say that the EPOS gear has some serious potential.
