Virtual dub mod can do some stuff, but it is highly inadiquite for higher level editing. I'd say between Paint and Photoshop in the image editing world, but closer to the Photoshop end of things. Plus, you'd need to toy with some plug-ins, but at least it's free and it's a start.

VirtualDub Mod is the best program i've come across for basic video editing. Programs like Vegas (which is brilliant), premier and Movie Maker are called video authoring programs. Editing can involve simples tasks such as - audio and video resampling / (r)encoding, cutting and chopping and moving, cropping frames, and adding transitions between frames. Even transitions is borderline authoring/editing....

Authoring is the act of adding or enhancing content in a piece of production. It involves things like effects, adding graphics and text, camera-play/tricks, etc.

So for editing, you can't go wrong with VirtualDub Mod. It's completely free. For authoring, the Movie Maker is free with XP (is it?), but apart from that i know of no other freeware authoring package.

BTW, if you are planning on downloading warez of either adobe premier or vegas, don't expect to see the light of day for a short period of your life (ie, learning curve is rather steep for people new to video production).
