I mostly use XoftSpy SE and Avast!, XoftSpy SE scans SUPER Fast and detects ALOT of the bad stuff.

I agree with you, with a bit extra on the spyware side of things. I keep Spybot S&D around because it has some nice tools (go into advanced mode, you'll see everything you need) with it, and an excelent bad website blocker via the host file, and very, very low ram usage. Also, Microsoft Antispyware (a.k.a., Windows Defender, what a lame-ass name) is good for force-uninstalling a lot of the stuff that has already got on the computer. But, it is a bit more of a resource hog then the others. I say, install it only when you are have trouble with everything else.

By the way, I am not a MS fanboy in any way. This post was brought to you by Ubuntu.

Zonealarm Suite is great but I think it uses lots of ram. I used avast!4 i think and it is great but you have to get an anti-spyware too

I have to back up Gamer420 on this one.

I have personally had to REMOVE McAffee and Nortan AntiVirus from over 3 pc's and 5 laptops.

Reasons?
McAffee-Gives you ads for McAffee, the computer it was running on had 4 viruses, the other computer it was running on had 2, and you have to pay a subscription for it. Takes a long time to finish scan... people who had it didnt even try anymore.

Nortan Antivirus- ALMOST impossible to shutdown/turnoff without logging into it. It just REFUSES to let you uninstall it unless you log in, dance, stab your sister in the eye and praise satan. Also subscription based, also slow scanning, and out of the remaining 6 computers I had to uninstall it from, 3 had at least 1 virus on it. One of those computers had SO MUCH SPYWARE that you could not START the operating system without safe mode.

Neither protects from spyware or even viruses, both have their own quirks.

Suggestion:
1. Use Spybot S&D for spyware.
2. Use Adaware SE Personal for adware (free version).
3. Use Firefox. Please. Dear God please. OR at least IE 7.
4. Use RegScrub XP to clean your registry after deleting all this crap to prevent problems.
5. Use AVG free virus scanner: Fast, easy to update/use, easy to remove if you tire of it, and you can make it ONLY RUN ONCE A DAY, so that it doesnt constantly drain your resources.
6. Use O&O Defrag Pro (free trial works great), it can defrag your computer completely with one pass, even if your hard drive is 98% full already. Defrag using ANY program that also does space defragmentation (O&O does that), so that the next thing you download doesnt get split up like swiss cheese.
7. Use FreeRam XP Pro, or some other high quality ram cleaner. This will run in the background, and if your ram drops below a certain amount (and you are not doing anything processor intensive or memory intensive), it will compress, clean, and move things from your ram into your virtual ram to keep your computer responsive (Imagine rebooting your computer without restarting).

Other than that, I got a whole bunch of other neat stuff, but those 7 things are almost REQUIRED on XP to ensure usablility.

^_^
