another pc question

a very merry christmas to all!! i hope u all had a good one. i got an external hard drive for xmas for my pc so as i type this i am copying all my avi's mp3's and iso's on to it cos im planning to wipe my hard drive and remove all of them nasty little viruses that just dont seem to wanna go away, what i am wondering is, all the programs i have installed on my pc is there any way for me to save them?? cos obviously some of them i downloaded and installed with random serial numbers which i dont have hold of anymore (getting the serials is probably what fucked my pc up in the first place!) but if i copy the folder from the C:/programfiles folder of the program onto my external harddrive then copied back on to my newly formatted pc would the program still work?? im sure other people have done this? any tips would be gratefully accepted!!

also i got the wireless steering wheel and pedals for my X box 360!! PGR3 just got ohhh sooo much better!! especially as i have car seats in my bedroom!! just thought id share that!!

No, there is no easy way to save your programs. Some may work, but most need specific registry keys and files made on install. Your best bet (if you want to save those programs) is to try cleaning out the buggies using a boot-time antivirus (avast or I think AVG does it too) and checking for spyware in safemode (Spybot, MS anti-spyware, and Adaware). Finaly, download a copy of Knoppix, burn it to a cd or dvd (depending on the version you downloaded), boot off of that, and start hunting around for root-kits if you think you have them (warning: minor Linux knowlage needed). That'll clean out 99.9999% of all the crap out there, but it is a good days worth of work. On the bright side, you don't lose all of those programs.

It would work, but you can't get any of the updates. WGA ("Windows Genuine Advantage," what an ass of a name) is a part of the newer updates of Windows that stop you from cracking XP. There are work-arounds, but they are annoying to install, and half of them break the next time WGA updates.

Actully, it's free forever and ever. Just register with your email (they'll send you the key) and once again every 14 months till the day you die. Oh, and trust me, you'll never ever get any spam from them.
