need help with laptop

i have a toshiba satellite pro 440cdt laptop
144ram
40gb hdd
everything else is still from factory

well until recently it would boot from cd
well i was updating from windows 2000 pro to xp pro
and durin the update it started saying "file copy error" so i thot wtf

i reset my comp cuz no file would copy
and it would boot from cd but my hard drive was corrupted
so i loaded the 2000 install cd and tried to reinstall 2000 but it was sayin I/O error

i loaded 98 se install and formatted my HDD...and tried to install 98 and halfway through the install the same "file copy error" happened

so i opened it up and took out the hard drive and put it back in making sure it was in tight and turned my comp back on

now it wont boot from any cd, burned or real
only once in a great while it will boot from a cd but if i get it far enough to start the install of any operation system, it will start the file copy error

when i put a cd in and it wont boot, the light just stays orange(the light saying the cd is being read)
but wen it will boot it will flash

is this a hard drive or cd drive problem??

and any idea how to fix it??

also wen i had 98 se installed
i installed the shit for my pcmcia wireless network card and wen i instarted it my comp wood freeze everytime

2000 pro it would allow me to cnnect to internet but would freeze ALOT

xp home wouldnt freeze as much but still froze all the time

xp pro - idk wouldnt let me install

...y cant i just have on good computer???

hummm....see if you can get it to boot knoppix (linux on cd/dvd, no hard drive needed). If it is a hard drive issue, you can erase and re-format it with QTParted, included on the disk somewhere in the big mess of programs. If knoppix doesn't boot (and it sounds like it won't), it could be the cd drive. Sometimes, I have had problems with the laser heads getting stuck. Gently wiggle the laser head in the direction of the track it sits on. Do not touch the glass laser lens. Also, give the drive moter a few spins to make sure it's not that. If that doesn't work, see if you can find a cd lens cleanind disk. A good substitute is a clean mircofiber cloth like what you use on eye glasses. Be careful with this method, though.

If all else fails, unplug it, and take out the battery, and leave it alone for a while. I've found that sometimes computers are like children. If you deny them electrons and ignore them so they can think about what they did, the problem fixes itself. Good luck!
