Church of England Cries Foul Over Video Game
PlayStation 3 Game Features Manchester Cathedral
LONDON -- The Church of England is calling a popular PlayStation 3 game sacrilegious.
The church is demanding that Sony pull "Resistance: Fall of Man" off the shelves because it uses Manchester cathedral as a backdrop to a violent gun battle. A spokesman said the church will send a letter to Sony on Monday asking for an apology. And the church will consider a lawsuit if its demands are ignored.
The church said Sony did not ask for permission to use the image of the cathedral, which is used as the staging ground for a virtual shootout that leaves hundreds of people dead.
Sony said it will release a statement on the matter later.

Update: Quote:
TOKYO -- Sony's video game unit is in talks with the Church of England over a violent video game.
At issue is the game "Resistance: Fall of Man" for the PlayStation 3 console. The church has complained that the famous Manchester Cathedral is the backdrop in some scenes where an armed player shoots alien enemies which spew blood.
The church said Sony didn't ask permission to use the church and wants an apology.
A spokeswoman for Sony acknowledges the church in the game bears a resemblance in some parts to the Manchester Cathedral. But she said the point was to depict a backdrop of an old church, not to illustrate a specific church.
She said Sony understands the Church of England was offended, especially because of its efforts to reduce gun violence in Manchester. But she isn't commenting on whether the company will donate money toward anti-violence efforts.

The fact that Sony modeled the church after a real church, without permission, is somewhat morally, and quite possibly, as we may soon find out, legally, wrong.
However, there does seem to be some sort of material interest here in the eyes of the Church of England. A church should try to remain as detached from worldly things as much as possible, especially gory video games. And if it were actually a law that modeling a game map over a real-life building or property without permission is illegal, I'm sure there would be many more lawsuits of such nature.
Should be interesting to see how the moral/ethical issues play in the legal arena. Nice find, JSF. |

We live in the 21st century. As hard as it is to completely remove religion, people need to wake up and smell the fresh air.

Smart idea probably... |

So the first thing that crossed my mind was Silent Hill. Cause considering it had a church related in the game. But now I kno which video game it was for sure. But the story does hav it's points though and all.

here's a quote from another source, not recent news but has a bit more info > Quote: |

The Church says Sony did not ask for permission to use the cathedral and has demanded an apology and the removal of the game from shop shelves - otherwise legal action will be considered.
Sony has not returned calls to officials from the Church.
The firm has also been branded irresponsible for choosing Manchester - a city plagued by gun violence which has left tens of youngsters dead.
The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, said: "It is well known that Manchester has a gun crime problem. For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great Cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have guns battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible."
He added: "Here in Manchester we do all we can to support communities through our parish clergy, we know the reality of gun crime and the devastating effects it can have on the lives - it is not a trivial matter."
It is understood photographers may have visited the Cathedral to take pictures for use in the game.
During the game players are asked to assume the role of an army sergeant and win a battle.
Screenshots of the game in play show the interior of the Cathedral with the player's gun ready to fight; soldiers can be seen elsewhere in the nave taking aim. |
