A New Jersey teenager claims he has broken the lock tying Apple's iPhone to the AT&T wireless network.
George Hotz, 17, of Glen Rock, has posted his method on his blog. It requires skill with software and soldering, and he said it takes about two hours to do.
The only major U.S. carrier apart from AT&T that's compatible with the iPhone's technology is the T-Mobile network. But breaking the lock does open up the iPhone for use on the networks of some overseas carriers.
The modification leaves intact most of the iPhone's functions, including a built-in camera and the ability to access Wi-Fi networks. The only thing that won't work is the "visual voicemail" feature, which shows voice messages as if they were incoming e-mail.
Hotz said he collaborated online with four other people, two of them in Russia.
Tech blog Endgadget.com also reported that a team has proved it's claim of a simple software package that unlocks the phone.
AT&T and Apple have not yet commented on the claims.
| Source Update Hacker Trades iPhone For 'Sweet' New Car Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO -- The New Jersey teenager who hacked into the iPhone is trading it for a new car.
George Hotz, 17, reworked his iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T. He posted on his blog that he traded the modified gadget for "a sweet Nissan 350Z" and three new iPhones.
Hotz made the deal with the co-founder of CertiCell, who also promised the teen a paid consulting job.
The three iPhones will be sent to the online collaborators who helped Hotz with the hacking job.
He called it "a great end to a great summer."

But I can't believe he managed to trade that one cracked iPhone for three new ones and a car. |
