My newish old computer

A few weeks ago, my grandfather gave me his old computer. When I got it it had 128 MB of RAM, and Pentium III running at 550 MHz. I just added 128 Mb of ram (making the total 256, which is the max the motherboard will hold) and overclocked to 600 MHz.

Anyways, its gonna be my linux computer. Right now, it has Xbuntu on it, and I was wondering if anyone knows if Ubuntu, or even Debian (with GNOME) will run nicely on it.

I don't think Linux needs much to run. Although I'm not sure though. Try looking on each distro's website for the requirements.

Xubuntu uses XFCE, which is better suited for old computers than GNOME, which is used by Ubuntu and (I think) Debian. However, you can always install an alternate desktop environment on the machine as well - so you could add XFCE to Ubuntu or to Debian.

So it may run Ubuntu as standard, but if it does it won't run well. IMO, stick with Xubuntu for now.

i didnt have any important files on it, so i decided to try ubuntu and debian. debian actually runs faster, and they even have a xfce version. the only thing is the aptitude always messes up for me on debian. =[
