Sparta Exploit Hello World and SDK Released
Permalink Jan 05, 2009 - 4:24 PM
More great news: MaTiAz and FreePlay (Michael M. on our forums) have released a "Hello World" homebrew application using the new GripShift, or Sparta exploit as it's being referred to now.

So here's the bad news with this exploit for the moment: You can't downgrade, run homebrew, or install any custom firmwares. However, with the release of the Software Development Kit (SDK) you can expect to be able to do these things soon.

Major news: New exploit found!
Permalink Jan 05, 2009 - 4:10 PM
We have big news for everyone, a new exploit has been found AND it works on the PSP-3000! Yes, you read correctly, it works on the PSP-3000. A coder by the name of MaTiAz, and with the help of FreePlay (our own Michael M.) found this exploit that is exicuted through the game GripShift. The exploit works very similarly to the GTA exploit(s) and the Lumines exploit.

MaTiAz had this to say about the exploit:
Quote:
GripShift has a buffer overflow vulnerability when loading savegames. The savegame contains the profile name which can be easily used to overwrite $ra. The savegame file is pretty big (25kB) so you have lots of space to put your code there. I wrote a simple blob of code to paint the framebuffer completely white (to just indicate that arbitrary code is running). The return address is located at offset 0xA9 in the file. In this poc it points to 0×08E4CD50 (which is only a few bytes after the return address), and the code starts at 0xCC in the file.
It was tested on 4.01M33-2 with US version of GripShift (ULUS10040), and psplink.prx, usbhostfs.prx and deemerh.prx loaded (also without psplink and usbhostfs). The decrypted savegame (sorry, couldn’t [be bothered to] get Shine’s savegame tool working so it’s in plaintext form) is in the SDDATA.BIN form which Hellcat’s Savegame-Deemer produces (thanks to him, if the program didn’t exist I wouldn’t have bothered with this). Just copy the ULUS10040SAVE00 directory to /PSP/SAVEPLAIN/ and run the game. EDIT: yeah, don’t forget to have Savegame-Deemer working, duh.
This is huge news so expect more updates to follow and of course homebrew on the PSP-3000 in the near future.

PSPFlash-Card v0.5
Permalink Dec 30, 2008 - 6:27 PM
Ever have trouble remembering definitions, dates or foriegn words for your next test? Well, that is where PSPFlash-Card comes in.

I know, I know, you're saying: but I'm still on break from school. But really, try it and I'm sure you'll like it. By just making up the cards, and practicing them for 5 minutes at a time, leading up to a test, several users have reported getting A's on tests. So it really works.

I have updated the flash card drilling application, adding:
Version 0.5
- Fixed sound cutoff when pages turn.
- Fixed word wrapping bug for the last word on a card.
Version 0.4
- audio cards (terms or definitions)
- image cards (terms or definitions)
- mutliple *card*.txt files to better organize your quizes
- fixed batch mode to work more reliably
- new background by Mike McMullen
- new icon, pic1 by LNAtropic
- now custom firmware friendly (3.xx and later)

PSP-4000 Launches In 2009, PSP2 Comes "Later"
Permalink Dec 17, 2008 - 6:54 PM
We have a new PSP rumor!!

Quote:
Sony has already shot down the rumor that a PSP2 is currently in the works, and that they'd rather focus on garnering more third-party support for the sleek portable.

But that doesn't mean they're sticking with the PSP-3000. According to Eurogamer, Sony has plans to issue yet another handheld update with the PSP-4000 in late 2009 (it's like an annual thing now), and the "true successor," the PSP2, will come at a later date. Citing "publishing sources," developers are supposedly already working on games for said successor, although Sony themselves "won't comment on rumor or speculation." Big surprise there. Anyway, it wouldn't be all that surprising to learn that this information was correct; the concept of yet another redesigned PSP isn't out of the realm of possibility, especially when some users weren't overly fond of the PSP-3000. The PSP-2000 - the upgrade that made the unit lighter and slimmer - really pushed sales through the roof for a while and after launching in late 2007, made 2008 the PSP's best year ever. The PSP-3000 also pushed sales, but perhaps due to what some just call a "weird screen issue," it didn't cause quite as big of a chart spike. What will a PSP-4000 do?

Obviously, with nothing official or concrete, we can't say for a fact that another upgraded PSP will release towards the end of next year, nor can we say the PSP2 is coming after that. It may sound logical and reasonable, but sometimes, neither logic or reason have a place in this industry.

BakonICE v1.60: Cheat Device for Socom Fireteam Bravo 2 Released
Permalink Dec 17, 2008 - 6:34 PM
NoEffex has released a new version of his Cheat Device for Socom Fireteam Bravo 2.

Quote:
heres whats new:

Changed the method in which I did the main/in-game menu variables and cheats.
Fixed the score modder.
Heavy optimizing of the cheat structure. It does more advanced calculations that I did not think of at the time of initial development. Total Size decreased. Speed increased.
Removed attachment modder. It failed.
Removed the stack viewer.
Pretty much redid the in-game menu, it had become all messed up on recent updates.
Much changes toward optimizing overall. Size matters.
The stick grenades and anything pertaining to nearest player now works. Again.
Added a kernel area dumper. Suicidal.
Everything pertaining to files in the seplugins folder shifted to a bakon folder inside seplugins. Cluttered seplugins suck. It will create the folder for you, but if you want to use your old ones you gotta move em.

PSP Virtual Globe in 3D Release
Permalink Dec 17, 2008 - 6:27 PM
This is an interesting piece of homebrew for your PSP. Its a virtual globe

Quote:
Like Laurie London, developer mifki’s got the Whole World in His Hands, and not only that; he has managed to pack the entire planet into a ~ 5.9MB archive for everyone to enjoy. Extract said zip to your memory stick, load up your PSP, and explore our beautiful Earth in its entirety.

Currently Virtual Globe’s feature set is somewhat lacking; however, mifki does plan to add some extra ingredients next time ‘round. So stay tuned.

Controls:

* Arrows - move
* L/R - zoom
* Cross/triangle - tilt
* Square/circle - rotate
* Start - menu

Known problems:

Not sure how it will work on PSP-1000 (fat) because of less memory available, it may crash. I think next versions will be Slim-only, sorry, I’ll have to drop support for older PSPs in order to implement great features I’m planning.
